Beanco 1939
From the Vintage Rag Trader collection of vintage & retro wallpaper sample books. These designs are taken from a Beanco sample book dated 1939. It was the eve of the second, Great War, when our grandparents were still young and some of our parents weren’t even born. This book of wallpaper samples contains some very familiar themes and motifs from an era of hope, fear and anxiety. In February of that year free air-raid shelters were issued to Londoners. The British government recognised Franco as head of state in Spain. In March, Hitler entered Prague. In May Italy and Germany forge the Pact of Steel. August sees Stalin and Hitler vow never to go to war against one another. In September Germany and Russia invade Poland and on the 3rd September Britain declares war on Germany and her allies. It would not be a year for redecorating.
