Vintage Photography – Hippolyte Arnoux – Images
Vintage photographs by Hippolyte Arnoux, a French commercial photographer based in Port Said during the second half of the 19th century. He collaborated with Antonio Beato and the Zangaki brothers, who were also based in Port Said. Arnoux is well known for his vintage photographs of topographical subjects and vintage studio photographs depicting traditional life and costume. He photographed the excavation for the Suez Canal in the 1860s and published the resulting photographs as Album du Canal de Suez. His vintage photographs of the pyramids, the sphinx and the Muslim holy places are now some of the most collectable images of 19th century Egypt.
The Water Carrier

In this photograph a veiled woman in traditional clothing stands with a water pot on her shoulder before a painted backdrop.
Albumen print on paper laid on card. Numbered: 236 in the plate – bottom right. Very good condition but slightly faded.

The Water Seller

This studio photograph is one of his well known photos of local people and tradesmen.
In this photograph a water seller carrying a pigskin water bag is filling a water pot watched by his customer.

Grand Tourists
A wonderful Vintage photograph by Hippolyte Arnoux. Signed: H Arnoux in the plate bottom left. Created in the second half of the nineteenth century.
In this photograph of a group of European tourist on donkeys head out sightseeing led by a local man and a small boy.
Albumen print on paper laid on card. This print is of good colour but was damaged prior to being laid down and there is a tear from the lefthand edge
running across the tip of the ears of the first donkey and the chest of his rider and continuing into the face of the man with the parasol. It is almost invisible.
